Picon is not exported to the United States. Over drinks in Paris, Peter Schaf of Tempus Fugit Spirits told me it’s because the spirit contains calamus, a flowering plant that’s used for medicinal purposes but is banned by the FDA.

True, you can’t get Amer Picon in the United States, for reasons I explained in the book. On the other hand, it’s such an iconic spirit and bottle in France, I felt it would be remiss to write a book about French drinks and not include it.
